Top Web Design Trends of 2010

With any kind of artistic work, there are always trends to follow or break. Web design is no different. Each year, or even each season, brings along new trends.

1) Minimalistic layouts are in


Making people click through a thousand different links before they can get where they want to be is so last year. In 2010, it has been all about making sure that people get all the information that they need, right up front, in a clean minimalist design. In some cases, this means a single page, while in other cases there might be a few pages. Either way, you never have to go searching.

2) Typography is all the rage

Making sure that your type is in, and even using different typography techniques to add dimension to the site is one of the biggest trends of web design in 2010. With everything from typography in tag clouds to using fun and funky fonts through the site, making sure that the type and the site work well together is very important.

3) More personalized design


Everyone wants their website to stand out. You want people to remember you (and your site of course!), otherwise there wouldn’t be a point to having the website. Because of this, people are taking different approaches than before.

Having a design that looks a little more hand drawn is one way that many people are achieving this. If you are an artist, this is an exceptionally great way to go!

4) Over-sized headers and footers


Though not our favorite of design choices, the trend in 2010 has been to make everything larger. With huge headers that take up a large portion of the page before someone has to scroll down, and sometimes even larger footers, along with huge amounts of information, it is felt that you will make a great impression. To us, though, this just feels like a ploy to make it seem like there’s more on the page than there really is.

5) Social Networking

If you don’t have links to your Facebook, MySpace, Twitter or Digg accounts (along with a huge variety of other social networking sites), many people are starting to wonder if you are legit. It has become almost a necessity to have these on your site in 2010. This is a trend that we don’t see going anywhere — social networking is just starting to take off!

6) Silly, fun or informative intros


Along with social networking, many people are starting to let loose a little. Many websites have an intro area, either at the top of the site or along one of the sides. This is where they can tell the reader or customer who they are, what they like, and anything else.

Whether you love or hate the way that the industry decided to head this year, it is good to know what is going on and keep constantly educated on web design. If you are planning to make a new website, keep these trends in mind. Whether you plan to follow them by the book, or shatter them completely, you need to know the rules.

  1. I am a big fan of the minimalistic style of design. It makes it so much more professional and clean. As a huge fan of typography as well I agree the use of the right typography in the right way can add a huge impact to your site.

  2. Agree with most of this – minimalistic and typography definitely.

    Less convinced by blindly covering sites in social media buttons. Where’s it’s useful, it’s good, but for many companies it’s a distraction and not required. These kind of things are fast becoming modern day hit counters….

  3. Minimalistic design has finally made its comeback and I really like that it did! There is nothing worse than being on a site and not being able to find what you are looking for. Apart from that, it looks clean and organized, giving off a good image of your company. Along with this social media and typography have both made a huge change to the web. Great article and information!

  4. Minimal and designs that are thinking about UX are finally becoming main stream which is good.

    Theres also a trend, certainly on designer pages of having large photographs of themselves which should work and make the designs more personal.

  5. Yes, all so true. Typography and minimalism are more important than ever and, while simple in concept, are very difficult to do right!

    I always get a twinge of excitement when I can use nothing but text to create a really powerful image.

  8. Minimalistics and choosing the right typography makes especially sense in today’s cluttered web designs. Not that minimalistic should be taken as text – only bland web design. It takes skill to create good minimalistic styles. Personalized web design, of course, is the only way to go if you want your website to stand out. I’d say it’s the only one worth considering, but unfortunately, most clients don’t agree with that.

  9. I’ve certainly seen a lot of the minimalist design going on and quite like much of it, but some seems just too minimalist IMHO. Anyone else? Was never sure about the oversize headers thing either. I like it as a visual concept but can’t get over the impact on webdesign, usability and content deployment, they just don’t seem to connect well for me.

  10. I LOVE the oversized headers and footers and think it does stand out but have had it poopooed by my clients.

    With the never ending supply of themes and formats, that I have to admit I use things tend to get a bit samey. Having said that, i find that clients tend to want what other people have and although it makes my job easier I have to tone down my creative juices.

    Luckily I love minimal and to do that well i a skill in its self.

    As soon as I remember that the site isn’t about me and its about them I tend to give them what they want.

    After all a happy client pays the bills.


  11. I’m not sure I like identifying trends.

    The word ‘trend’ sounds so counter-productive when it comes to design since if we’re imitating other people and their web sites and designs, is that really “design” or are we just copying other people?

  12. Love the minimalist design – to persuade clients that less is more – but everyone wants everything on the home page – when will they learn.

    And for 2012 – lets hope minimalism and typography keep the upward curve….

Thanks for the article Christina (hope the blogging is keeping you sane) I’m finding minimalistic layouts to be a little boring unless they are done in a striking way, hand drawn is cool and memorable, also I disagree with what you said about social networking icons, it doesn’t always make for a more trusted site but I suppose it helps for people who are very into social networking.

  14. Saw this article and thought I would take a look. What I liked about this article is that even though it is a couple of years old a lot of the design I am seeing today are in this article. Especially when it comes to minimal and personalised design. I love this style of design and when it is used in the correct way t can really make the design stand out.
